This post is the second in a series on how to thrive at the office. To start at the beginning, click here.
You want a life of engagement and meaning. You want a life of your own design that provides joy, peace, and ease. You want a life that thrives. Here is the next step in that journey. And guess what? It doesn’t involve doing more.
Sleep: Hopefully this article is not already putting you to sleep, but if so, it is highly likely you have joined the millions of Americans who don’t get enough sleep. The average American gets 6.8 hours of sleep per night with the recommended amount being 8.5 hours of sleep for every 24-hour period (Stickgold, 2001).
Also, 40% of Americans report getting 6 hours of sleep or less (Deaton, 2008). 40%!!!
Not getting enough sleep not only makes us feel terrible, but can also make us fatter. Lack of sleep impacts our body’s ability to process glucose and increases insulin resistance causing us to crave more carbohydrates and sugars (Markwald, 2013).
To add insult to injury, stay sleep deprived long enough (and by long enough, I mean one week) and you will also be just slightly dumber (Stickgold, 2001). We are less able to perform complex tasks and to remember details when we are sleep deprived.
Your Actions for Mastery: No way around this one: you’ve got to shut it down earlier. Even the benefits of a 15-minute nap during the day can pay dividends. Go out to your car at work or close your office door, set a timer, and take a snooze.
